THE SILENT ASSASSINcalled “outstanding” in a starred review in Publishers Weekly—is now out in paperback!  The Chicago Tribune said, “Blending elements of forensic-powered mystery, psychological suspense and a Ludlumesque espionage thriller, Andrews' newest is a page-turner with enough jaw-dropping plot twists to satisfy the most demanding mystery reader.”  The book took me to Vietnam and prompted my op ed in The New York Times.

Like its predecessor, SEQUENCE, it’s being translated into languages around the world, including Dutch, German, and Japanese.  When a pal of mine couldn’t find THE SILENT ASSASSIN in a bookstore in Chicago, she bought it in Montreal.  And a CBS anchorwoman approached me excitedly at a party.  “You’ve really made the big time,” she told me.  “I bought your book at COSTCO!”

A real honor:  The top magazine for lawyers called me a “Newsmaker of the Year” for 2008 and described me as “a lawyer with a literary bent and has the scientific chops to rival any CSI investigator.” See full review here.

My newest thriller, IMMUNITY, will be released in September.  Alex teams with a hot DEA agent to investigate possible bioterrorism.  For that book I investigated  real-life superbugs, computers that run on DNA, heat-seeking surveillance devices, and drugs that rewire the immune system.  Read the first chapter.

My legal work continues to pull me into mysteries involving genetic testing of historic figures, cutting edge artists who use genetics in their work, pro bono cases involving children with diabetes, and advising government agencies around the world—including the National Cancer Institute—about sperm donation, in vitro fertilization, genetics, and human research.  I’ve been interviewed about my work on Oprah, Nightline, the Today Show, CBS Morning News, with brief clips posted here.

Along the way, I’ve also had a chance to become close buddies with two other women with the same name, a jazz harpist and an artist both named Lori Andrews.  See The Other Loris to follow our escapades.  And, if you are a Lori, even if you have a different last name, e-mail me about yourself and maybe I’ll use your last name in my next book!

For librarians and book groups, e-mail me and I will send you a reading group question guide.  And I’d be glad to participate by phone in your readers’ group, unless I happen to be in Berlin, Paris, Egypt, or Dubai (some of the places I’ve gone recently for my legal job).

Keep in touch—and see you at Thrillerfest in New York in July!

coverCOMING IN SEPTEMBER 2008: IMMUNITY

Taking a break from decoding the genetic sequence of a tropical disease, Alex investigates the case of a DEA agent who died a gruesome and unexplained death on a Mob stakeout. Within hours, Alex tracks similar deaths throughout the Southwest.  Is it a naturally occurring epidemic—or has a lethal bioweapon been released in the United States?

With the nation’s attention focused on a provocative presidential race, Alex’s attempts to warn Homeland Security fail.  Only with the help of a rogue DEA agent and a smack-talking supercomputer will Alex stand a chance of putting an end to the devastation.  As the plague spreads, public hysteria mounts.  Then, while feverishly working to decode its source, Alex unwittingly exposes herself to the disease...

When a John Doe with a bayonet wound in his chest is discovered in a Washington, D.C., alley, geneticist Dr. Alexandra Blake of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology is pulled away from her bioterrorism work to aid in the investigation. Just a little digging reveals a corpse that's not at all that of the homeless robbery victim it was set up to resemble—and Alex and her colleagues find themselves wrapped up in a complicated mystery of high-stakes international financial intrigue... Read an excerpt!

"Outstanding... Alex becomes the target of a determined murderer, whose connections reach to the highest levels of government. The tight plot moves toward its explosive conclusion when a peaceful White House ceremony to return the skulls to Vietnam erupts into intense violence."
Publishers Weekly starred review

“Internationally renowned genetics expert, distinguished professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law and director of the Institute for Science, Law and Technology at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Lori Andrews—who was born in Chicago and grew up in Downers Grove—can add another title to her already impressive résumé: best-selling mystery author.”
—Chicago Tribune

"Moving from the White House to a remote village in Vietnam, Andrews’ second series book is an outstanding thriller. Geneticist Alexandra Blake has as many sharp angles as soft edges. She’s a scientist with a heart—and a scalpel brain. Andrews’ tale deftly tackles international intrigue, violence and the murky world of political ambition."

NOW AVAILABLE IN PAPERBACK: SEQUENCE

[cover] The first Alexandra Blake thriller

"SEQUENCE is a marvelous, whip-smart thriller with a twist—a double helix sort of twist, that is. In Alexandra Blake, a brilliant and resolute D.C. geneticist with a taste for old cars and major commitment issues, Andrews has given us a protagonist who already feels like an old friend. Here’s hoping she’s with us for a long, long time."
Dylan Schaffer, author of the Misdemeanor Man mysteries
